September 2013 – Yakima Driving Trip

A group of Heritage Club members drove to Yakima, Washington for five days of sightseeing, golfing shopping and fun. The trip began with a leisurely four-hour drive to Yakima with various stops along the way.

A particular highlight for many was the scenic drive along highway 821 through the canyon following the Yakima River. The temperature was about 85 degrees and it was exciting to see so many herds of elk trekking down for water, fishermen, standing in the river casting their lines, rafters and kayakers drifting along with the currents and up above sky gliders floating by and mountain goats watching over—for some, the four hour drive expanded to six or seven hours because of the frequent photo stops.

Early each morning, the golfers set out to the various courses that were reserved for them, while others looked for bargains in the shops or enjoyed the beautiful outdoor pool at the hotel and soaked up the sun. Afternoons consisted of sightseeing through the quaint towns nearby, the apple orchards with tons of apples being harvested, the vineyards or more pool time.

Of special interest was the trip to Topponish, the rustic little town with many awesome murals on all the buildings and lots of history. Later in the afternoon, each day, the group enjoyed happy hours by the pool followed by dinner. For two of the evenings, people stayed by the pool while Ken and Fred BBQ’d some spectacular meals. And, there was a Best Ball Tournament on Wednesday. Congratulations to team winners, Brent, Bev and Ray.

The entire group enjoyed the area and the hotel so much, they voted to return again next September. Mark the week of September 7-13 (tentative) on you calendar so you can join in on the fun next year.

Many thanks to Ken Cornish and Carol Burchett for organizing our trip.
